The company operated a regional chain of
fancy theatres, including the famous "Vickie" :
Listed in the
National Register of Historic Places in 1985, the
Victoria Theatre, known affectionately to generations of movie goers as the
"Vickie", opened in downtown Shamokin in January 1918. The elaborate
Beaux-Arts Victoria Theatre was built for and housed the central offices of the Chamberlain
Amusement Company, which operated eight theater
houses in the region.
Designed by noted architect W. H. Lee,
the building met the challenging entertaining needs of the day, showing movies
as well as accommodating live stage performances. Lee, who began his
architectural practice in Shamokin, later moved to Philadelphia. He was
responsible for the design of over 200 theaters during his career Easton's State
Theatre (1926) and Reading's Astor Theatre (1928), which was listed in Pennsylvania
At Risk in 1992 and was demolished in 1998.
Wonderful and uncommon theatre stock.
