In 1901 George M. Hendee, a high wheel champ and C. Oscar Hedstrom, also a racer, pooled money and inventive genius to open the Hendee Manufacturing Company (changed to Indian Motocycle Manufacturing in 1913) in Springfield, Massachusetts.
